Manchester Orchestra tickets now on sale!

I really haven’t meant for this to turn into a WQAQ blog, but finalizing some things about this show has definitely taken up most of my life recently.

The final band has been confirmed as the very excellent Cut Off Your Hands from New Zealand. They sound somewhere between the Cure, the Killer’s first album, and Dear & the Headlights. Their newest album is called “You & I” and I strongly recommend it. This will probably be one of the only times they play Connecticut ever, so don’t miss it!

Also, advance ticketing has started, and you can buy yours HERE. Including service charge they’re something like $6.63 each, and you can print them at home of your own convenience.

If you are a Quinnipiac student, do NOT buy your ticket online. Starting the Monday after spring break, March 16th, I believe, we’re going to have free tickets available in the student center. Just show your Q-Card and you’re golden. Students are obviously a priority here, and there WILL be enough available for all who want them. We’re also going to have some guest tickets available for $5 each.

If you don’t want to buy a ticket online at all, a limited quanitity of 100 or so will be available at Redscroll Records in Wallingford, CT starting sometime the week of March 16th. Pending online sales, these may (and probably will) be retracted before the show date, so if you’re considering this as an option do it sooner rather than later. These tickets will be $5.

It’s going to be an awesome show! See you all there! RSVP to the event on Last.fm, I’ll post the Facebook one when it gets made!

First Impressions: New Manchester Orchestra Single

manchesterorchestra 2

Yeah, so I’m giving Manchester Orchestra a lot of coverage lately. Between a bitchin’ bootleg and confirming them as the headliner for my school’s spring concert this year, I’d say it’s rightfully deserved. Today brought about two unexpected surprises: an April 21st release date for their next record, Mean Everything to Nothing, and a new single called “I’ve Got Friends.”

I remember seeing the band last January at the Living Room in Providence, RI(P). They were headlining one of WBRU’s awesome Cheap Date concert series. They played a few new songs, all of which had the uncanny ability to clearly recall what bands had influenced Manchester Orchestra while still retaining their own uniqueness. “Black Man” sounded like a rough draft of Nirvana’s “Lithium,” and after “Shake it Out” I remember thinking they’d been hanging out with Colour Revolt a lot more.

I’ve only listened to the single two or three times right now, but such is the point of a first impression. And yeah, like the others, it’s easy to pick out most of the bands Manchester’s toured with lately. The whole thing’s got kind of an intense Brand New feel, layered with “oh-oh-oh”s ripped straight from Kevin Devine books and a few Annuals-reminiscent “ba-ba”s.

Of everything I’ve heard off the new Manchester album, through bootlegs or otherwise, I think I might venture to say I like “I’ve Got Friends” the least. Nothing about this review is trying to imply it’s a bad song or that Manchester Orchestra is a cover band. They just wear their influences very prominently on their sleeves. Fortunately, their influences are fucking awesome.

WQAQ 2009 Spring Concert: Manchester Orchestra

As music director of my humble college radio station, one of my responsibilities is to book the annual spring concert. Last year’s stellar lineup featured Minus the Bear, Kevin Devine, and Paulson; this year’s headliner is Manchester Orchestra.

If you know me, I’ve been pretty vocal about this band since first getting their debut LP, I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child, and most recently, their EP Let My Pride Be What’s Left Behind. I fucking love the shit out of this band, and with the forthcoming release of their sophomore album this spring there’s really no better time to see them before they absolutely explode.

The date of the show is April 3rd, 2009 at Quinnipiac University’s Alumni Hall. Tickets will be free for QU students and $5 for the general public. They’ll probably go on sale at the end of February. Openers are TBD. This’ll be your best source of information, I’ll post more news as it gets confirmed. Come out, it’s going to be a great show already!

Awesome: Manchester Orchestra Bootleg

Manchester Orchestra Promo

The fantastic Guys With Record Collections is the definitive source for Kevin Devine bootlegs and all things KD related, but on occasion they’ll post a live set from a band he’s on tour with. Fortunately, Kevin’s most recent tour brought him around with Manchester Orchestra, and the blog’s got an entire goddamned set from the band.

The audio quality is decent, but I’m able to look past that for a glimpse of Manchester’s next album, Mean Everything to Nothing. I’m not sure when it’s coming out, but after hearing this I’m positive it’s going to totally rock your shit.
